Craig Lawrence

Since starting university I realised using domestic knitting machines and I realised its utterly different from hand knitting and it is very labour intensive but fruitful after a lot of  practice.

One more line

P1020706Another of my favourites, I think I am getting the hang f this drawing thing, here I was just experimenting using coulor and pencil, getting more confident to use pencil P1020699

I drew the out outline using graphite because I wanted that shiny texture but when I looked at it again, it did not look nice so I compromised and used watercolour one of my favourite medium I really like this drawing because of the line and plus I had fun drawing it.

Evaluation

For the project brief Sleuth, Spies and Lies, I do not think I performed very well to my standard. I picked Morrissey as my ‘word’ for the project instead of me embarking on what could have been an amazing project I found myself dwindling and not doing my work as I should have been because I spent so much time analysing all my research and being critical of the brief before I had even done an work, which I think affected my performance on this brief so therefore I fell out of love with my project. On the brighter side I learnt that I am good at drawing and should put more practice into it. I thoroughly enjoyed my KNIT Workshop apart from the ‘fuss’ with the knitting machines, which I will get the hang of on the other hand my 3D workshop was not as enjoyable although I did learn to use industrial sewing machines and over lockers. I also have been learning the basics of pattern cutting and making which is a plus for the 3D workshop. I felt my project did not work well with that particular workshop.

The work of Gabriella Brouch

I have been drawing a lot lately and from now and then I need a lot lot of inspiration which I found in illustrator Gabriella Brouch, her work is very surrealistic it a has many forms i.e deer people as seen above. I absolutely  love it and have drawn inspiration from the way she uses pencils and other forms of media which I hope i will learn to better. Visit her website HERE

Deconstruction!!!

For my 1m X 1m drawing I decided to do a lot of drawings mainly of girls. For my deconstruction drawing task I decided to choose the words photocopy and multiply.  I started of by photocopying the drawings and then ripping them up, even the original drawings.

This is what I started of with a couple of photocopies and the originalsP1020009

I then started a process of almost decompsing the drawings and making marks to an A1 SHEET and sticking the images to the paper and ripping them up.P1020011P1020014P1020027

This is what I had after 2 hours of work, I was to not happy with it, so I decided to do further deconstruction by using a rotary cutter and ruler to get straight edges.P1020041

This is the finished DECONSTRUCTED DRAWING.

I particularly enjoyed this project as it gave me a new way of working which I have carried out so far in my my other drawings. P1020380

Some girls are bigger than others

My project brief is called sleuth, spies and lies and I picked Morrisey as my subject. At the start of my project I failed to project Morrisey in the way that I wanted to in the end after many naive and failed drawings I drew an illustration of a large woman in a magazine, she was a plus size model among a a sea sticks and waif thin models who looked like they were suffering from malnutrition.. After my successful draw I was advised by my tutor to focus on women and draw waif people. With that in mind I decided to name my project 'SOME GIRLS ARE BIGGER THAN OTHERS'. I did this merely because I wanted a project title to work with and I thought this would help me apply it to my brief of Sleuth, Spies and Lies, as I would be investigating the female form and illustrating it. So far I have taken pictures of people on the streets with or without their permission, I also asked a few of my friends if they would like to be a part of my project.
These are some of the pictures of the people so far.

Sketchbook Review

Visuals

P1020401

I have plenty of drawings in my sketchbook but I do need to move out of it and concentrate on larger scale drawings, most of my drawings are in A4. I also got comment that people do not understand what my project was about in relation to the Sleuth, Spies and Lies project. I need more annotations in my sketchbook to help people understand my project. This was one of my first successful sketchbook drawings and it has given direction.

Contextual

I have been photographing all the people that I have used in my project and most of my artist research is on this blog.

One of my best point from, the sketchbook review is that I am very good at drawing and I am good at using colour and texture. Some people note that I need quick drawings which I am currently working on at the moment. I also learnt that my drawings are better when they are not too contained and when I play with a lot of colour and use mixed media.

Inspiration comes in different 'forms'

Of course these dolls are not mine but they reminded me of some work I have been currenltly doing. i like that there is no shape to this dolls and how they are jsut straight up and which reminds me more of catwalk models some of them have barely reached their prime in adolescent but are considered women!!
